Elon Musk is no stranger to sharing his ideas for free. Last year he unveiled the Hyperloop and welcomed anyone to take his designs because he doesn't have the time to build it. Now he might give away Tesla patents in order to boost industry-wide development of electric cars.
The BBC asked Musk if he was considering giving away Tesla's tech and he said, "You're on the right track. We don't want to cut a path through the jungle and then lay a bunch of landmines behind us." This comes after a shareholders meeting earlier this week in which Musk talked about speeding up electric car development. In order to do so he said Tesla was "playing with doing something fairly significant on this front which would be kind of controversial with respect to Tesla's patents."
This move could hurt Musk personally (and financially) more than it did to give away the Hyperloop. It goes to show Musk is truly dedicated to the advancement of EVs.
