Year: 1959

Sometimes, the simplest invention can be the most important. Hockey players are still pretty crazy, but until 1959 the goaltenders played without any protection for their faces, which is really next level nuts. Jacques Plante decided to take a stand against that kind of insanity, starting to use a mask to protect his face after getting his nose broken and face cut up by a slapshot. Soon thereafter, all goaltenders began to see the wisdom in keeping their faces relatively safe, and obviously this is a technology that has managed to stick around through the years.
