Exactly one month after Jason Collinsbecame the first active openly gay player in NBA history, a college basketball player has followed in his footsteps. Jallen Messersmith, who plays at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kan., did an interview with Outsports recently and announced that he is also gay. In doing so, he became the first active openly gay player in U.S. men's college basketball. Messersmith came out to his teammates prior to playing last season and said that he wanted to help others by outing himself publicly.

"When I came out, there was nobody in my sport I could [relate to]," he said. "I always wanted to put it out there and I had a great experience with it and I wanted to show people it could be fine."
