A Six-Year-Old Took His Family Car on a Joyride This Weekend

He made it three miles before police stopped him.

Early Saturday morning, a six-year-old boy from Lapeer, Mich. had a hankering for some Chinese food. But his parents were still fast asleep, so he decided to take matters into his own hands. He hopped into his family's Ford Taurus station wagon, put the keys in the ignition, and set off for the Chinese restaurant he had visited with his family the night before. And, despite the fact that he had (obviously!) never driven, he made it about three miles before Lapeer County Sheriff's Deputy Karl Sapp pulled him over.

"I opened the door and asked him what he was doing," Sapp said yesterday. "He told me he was going to the dealer to get the car fixed."

It needed to be fixed, too. Although the boy was able to make it about three miles during his joyride, he isn't a natural behind the wheel. He drove pretty recklessly during his short trip and cracked the car's bumper by running into a street sign. But, all things considered, it's a miracle that the kid made it as far as he did without sustaining any other damage or getting into a major wreck.

Police are still trying to determine whether or not to press any charges against the boy's parents, who eventually woke up and retrieved both him and the car.
