Supercar braking systems are a captivating thing. Crafted from expensive, exotic compounds, their main purpose for existing is to be slowly destroyed, all in the name of a driver's personal safety. But what does it take to brake when the well-being of hundreds is at stake on an almost million-pound jet? Boeing has answered that question, giving a glimpse into some of their testing procedures.
To make sure their behemoth 747 can stop without a doubt, Boeing strips the braking pads of all their carbon surfacing, then requires the jumbo jet to go from 200 mph to naught, on braking power alone, no reverse thrusters allowed.
