AGE: 32 (June 7, 1947 – August 2, 1979)
CAUSE OF DEATH: Plane crash
COMPLEX SAYS: As the catcher and captain of the Yankees, Munson's play on the field and leadership (ahem, Jorge) helped New York win back-to-back titles in '77 and '78. During his career, Munson won an AL MVP award, three Gold Gloves, and Rookie of the Year honors. Though he was beloved in New York, Munson's heart remained in his home state of Ohio where his family resided. He died in Ohio during flying lessons which he was taking in an effort to be able to visit home more frequently.
