COMPLEX SAYS: As one of the greatest collegiate running backs of all time, Davis made historic strides both on and off the field during his tenure at Syracuse. The Elmira Express led the Orangemen to an undefeated season and national championship as a sophomore in 1959 and two years later he became the first African-American to win the Heisman trophy. He was selected first overall in the 1962 draft by the Washington Redskins (later traded to the Cleveland Browns) but Davis never played an NFL game as he was diagnosed with leukemia just months after the draft.
