RISE TO POWER: When GM wanted to compete with the influx of Japanese imports, they developed a brand with fuel-efficient, small cars that were based on Japanese econoboxes. Seemed like a no-brainer. And for a moment it was, as its Metro model was a best seller.

DEATH KNELL: As soon as fuel was affordable again, the public shied away from Chevy's super-economy brand and in 1998, GM decided to fold the brand into Chevrolet and phase out Geo altogether.
