Director: Kim Jee-woon
Stars: Min-sik Choi, Byung-hun Lee
In 2011, the serial killer genre got a shot of pure grisliness with I Saw the Devil, South Korean director extraordinaire Kim Ji-woon's shockingly, and merrily violent thriller that made it onto our Best of the Year list, with ease. Lee Byung-hun (G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra) kills it as the film's lead, a distraught widower hell-bent on torturing his wife's murderer (the superb Choi Min-sik) to no end, blurring the lines between who's bad and who's good.
No matter whose side you're on, though, Ji-woon goes to outrageous lengths to make the decision-making process a difficult one—pondering allegiances while seeing Achilles Tendon's getting severed and disemboweled organs is never easy.
