A kidnapping and its resulting chase ended in a Census Bureau guard being killed, as well as the suspect and three police officers being injured in D.C. yesterday.

According to the NBC Washington, the incident began yesterday afternoon when the unidentified aggressor kidnapped his wife in Northeast D.C. From there, the man traveled to the U.S. Census Bureau headquarters, which is located in Suitland, Md. That's where the gunman was seen arguing with his wife by Lawrence Buckner, a guard at the gates of the building. NBC Washington adds that Buckner, 59, was shot when he approached the vehicle.

By now, D.C. police had gotten word of the kidnapping, and the gunman's vehicle was seen by police after he returned to D.C.:

Later, D.C. police spotted the gunman's car. He shot at pursuing police at 3rd and K streets in Northeast, Lanier said. In the area of 11th and H streets, a busy section of northeast D.C., police were able to block the gunman's path with their cruisers, causing a collision with the gunman's dark green Honda.

In an exchange of gunfire with police, the gunman was shot multiple times. There was conflicting information about his condition Thursday night.

In addition, an officer was injured during the exchange of gunfire, and two more sustained other injuries. NBC Washington notes that none of their injuries are life-threatening.

Although the gunman's wife was safe when police eventually located her, Buckner died at Prince George's Hospital Center yesterday evening.

The Census Bureau opened two hours late today, and D.C.'s H Street corridor—where the final standoff took place—was closed for the bulk of the morning as the investigation continued.
