Caesar and his clan of cinematic simians continued to dominate the box office as the second weekend of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes beat out the debuts of The Purge: Anarchy and Sex Tape.

Apes brought in another $36 million this weekend and has now racked up $139 million in the U.S. over two weeks. It's also one of the best-reviewed movies of the year so far.

The Purge sequel earned $28.4 million to take No. 2, which is less than the original's $34.1 million opening. The movie's tiny budget of $9 million means it has already made an ass-load of profit anyway, though.

For comparison, Apes cost a reported $170 million to make, so it's all relative.

Jason Segel getting it in with Cameron Diaz did not turn on the ticket buyers. Sex Tape finished fourth with $15 million, behind No. 3, Planes: Fire and Rescue ($18 million).

Overall, this is still not a good summer for the movie studios. Revenue is down 24 percent from this same weekend last year.
