A 2-year-old boy was tragically killed last week in San Francisco when a dolphin statue fell on top of him.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Kayson Shelton and his family were visiting the city from Utah when he climbed atop the statue outside of the Majestic Collection Art Gallery at Fisherman's Wharf on Friday afternoon. The statue began to fall, and the Chronicle adds that his 6-year-old sister attempted to stop it, but was unable to due to its weight.
Authorities say Shelton did not appear to be seriously injured initially, suffering only a bloody nose. However, his condition worsened rapidly at San Francisco General Hospital, eventually forcing his transferal to the emergency room, where he was pronounced dead at 3:40 p.m. due to internal injuries.
Police told the Chronicle that merchants had been told about the presence of large objects in walkways. "For a couple of years now the merchants have been warned," Capt. David Lazar of Central Station said, adding that it's a "violation of municipal police code."
The Chronicle added that Majestic Collection received a citation for violating the code on Friday.
