If you look at the facts, there’s something about the Aereo streaming service that just doesn’t seem right. Why should we have to pay to watch ABC, NBC, or CBS?

The Supreme Court of the United States agrees, ruling today that what the service does is in violation of the Copyright Act. Don’t we feel validated!

Justice Stephen Breyer wrote on the SCOTUSblog that “the essence of the Aereo ruling is that Aereo is equivalent to a cable company, not merely an equipment provider,” although Aereo contended that because users must actively request specific programming, they are not a constantly streaming service.

One investor previously stated that if the Supreme Court ruled against them then “[Aereo] probably will not be able to continue,” so it will be interesting to see where they go from here. For now, though, it appears the startup is in big trouble.
