Yesterday, a small plane crashed in Purchase, N.Y., killing pilot Richard Rockefeller. Rockefeller, 65, was the son of philanthropist David Rockefeller and the great-grandson of oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller.
WABC-TV in New York reports that the plane crashed into trees on Route 120 just after 8 a.m., roughly 10 minutes after taking off. He was the lone passenger in the plane.
Family spokesman Fraser Seitel told WABC that Rockefeller, who lives in Falmouth, Maine, was in town to celebrate his father's 99th birthday. "The family is in shock," Seitel told the Journal News. "Richard was a wonderful and cherished member of the family. He was an experienced pilot. He was a medical doctor, and it's horribly sad."
