This afternoon during a HuffPost Live interview with Sean Astin, we were treated to a surprise visit from his former Goonies co-star Corey Feldman, who took it upon himself to ask Astin about a potential sequel to the 1985 classic. While rumors about the movie have been raging for some time, we finally got some firsthand info about the upcoming project.
Astin said that Steven Spielberg (who co-wrote the original film) and Richard Donner (who directed) are “actively trying to secure a writer based on an outline that they feel really confident about,” and that once that process is complete a script will follow soon thereafter.
As for Astin’s potential involvement, he said that “It’ll be a thing, and if they want me to be a part of it then I’m sure it will work out.” Spielberg’s co-writer Chris Columbus is also believed to be involved, according to both Astin and Feldman.
Here’s the clip of the pair’s conversation. Feldman comes in at 17:00, and they begin to discuss Goonies 2 at 18:34:
