This summer, Marvel is moving away from its traditional Avengers formula to bring audiences something completely unique in Guardians of the Galaxy. Instead of focusing on heroes with household names, this movie will star a group of misfits including Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Bradley Cooper as the voice of the surly Rocket Raccoon, and Vin Diesel as the voice of the treelike Groot.

With this debut trailer for the film, audiences are introduced to this world with the help of an overabundance of humor. Don’t expect this movie to be dark, gritty, or realistic; instead, look forward to a completely surreal experience with a talking raccoon, a living tree, and a former WWE wrestler.

All of this will be grounded by the performance of Pratt, who fits the Marvel mold of being a sarcastic everyman with some heroic chops. For the most part, this trailer holds back on showing off the good stuff, but it does a perfect job of setting up this world in an entertaining way. Still, you can tell there is something here that is a much-needed change of pace from Marvel’s typical formula.

Guardians of the Galaxy will be in theaters starting August 1.
