Much controversy has been swirling around former Missouri defensive end Michael Sam who, amidst his preparations for the 2014 NFL Draft, announced this past weekend that he is gay. Should Sam be drafted and make the opening-day roster for the 2014-15 NFL season (which is likely), he will be the first openly gay athlete to have played on a major professional sports team in the United States. Of course, with this landmark announcement, ignorance and criticism have followed, the gist of it being that the NFL simply isn't ready for an athlete like this. Thankfully, Sam hasn't been alone in defending himself, and Dallas news anchor Dale Hansen was one of his most ardent (and surprising) supporters this week when he took a moment during his newscast to express his frustrations with the current standards that the NFL has regarding its players. Watch and be amazed.
