If you’re interested in Capcom’s weird new PS4-exclusive MMO Deep Down, which looks like the unlikely hybrid of Assassin’s Creed and Dark Souls (narratively speaking, anyway), you may be interested to hear this news blip coming just after TGS: Playstation president Shuhei Yoshida has tweeted that the game will be a free-to-play MMO, also reiterating that there will be an open beta scheduled for around the Japanese launch of the PS4 over Twitter.

While free-to-play games have (often deservedly, arguably) gotten a bad rap in the past as essentially being interactive commercial shills, the sheer the production values and Dragon’s Dogma-esque sense of scope here seems to suggest that Deep Down will not be a crass commercial cash-in.

So, there ya have it – no worrying about FFXIV type monthly fees and whatnot. Is free-to-play the way to go here? At the very least a triple-A experiment into the model has the potential to be very interesting – as long as you’re not being nickled and dimed to death.
