Many great games were played on outdated school computers when teachers had nothing better to teach or an incompetent substitute was in, but none of the other educational games around could touch Oregon Trail. The plight of the pioneers was incredibly boring when read about it in a book or seen in some cut-rate, Conestoga wagon and log cabin historical film, but there was something about catching dysentery yourself that made Oregon Trail an ideal learning tool. We still treasure our memories of fording rivers and visiting the general store from the comfort of our floppy discs. Though there wasn't much historical detail to be gleaned from the game, it taught the most important lesson of all about the pioneer era: life was terrible back then.
