Right when it was announced that Disney would be releasing the first part of a brand new Star Wars trilogy in 2015, fans of the franchise began feverishly brainstorming on choices for who could direct these new movies. And one of the filmmakers who kept popping up on wishlists everywhere was J.J. Abrams, the man behind Lost and the recent reboot of Star Trek. Now, in an interview with Empire, Abrams revealed that he actually was offered the chance to direct the new Star Wars.

There were the very early conversations and I quickly said that because of my loyalty to Star Trek, and also just being a fan, I wouldn't even want to be involved in the next version of those things. I declined any involvement very early on. I'd rather be in the audience not knowing what was coming, rather than being involved in the minutiae of making them.

We’re not sure the sci-fi world would be able to handle a director that was involved in both Star Trek and Star Wars at this time. Our country simply hasn’t come that far yet. However, there are rumors that the new Star Wars director will be revealed early in 2013, so we’ll be ever vigilant over the next few weeks to bring you the news.
