For Mexican mayor Dr. Maria Santos Gorrostieta had survived two assassination attempts on her life, both of which left her with horrific injuries. But the cartels found her eventually. The 36-year-old, who refused to back down from the drug gangs that have ruined Mexico, was found dead on the side of a road in San Juan Tararameo. She had been beaten, burned and stabbed, and was bound at the feet and ankles.

Gorrostieta had been missing since November 12, when she left to take her youngest daughter to school. Her vehicle was blocked in by another, and she was kidnapped in plain sight. She convinced the attackers to leave her daughter alone, but there was nothing anyone could do to help Gorrostieta. Her government security detail was withdrawn last November, and her police escort in January.

Her second husband, Nereo Delgado Patinoran, disappeared the same day that she did. Many figured that Gorrostieta's bravery would eventually come at the cost of her life.
