Courtesy of IGN, we bring you the long-awaited debut trailer for the remake of The Evil Dead. And, honestly, it’s nowhere near as bad as it could have been. Drenched with blood and gore, this footage is absolutely packed with sadistic moments that should bring back fond memories of the original. Director Fede Alvarez doesn’t seem intimidated by bringing a horror classic back to theaters because this movie looks like both a love letter to the first one and a new vision for the franchise.

There are a lot of quick cuts and a concentration on violence in this trailer, so we’re not sure yet how closely the plot will stick to Sam Raimi’s version of the movie. But we’re still pleasantly surprised by just how genuinely creepy the whole thing looks. Even the actors look suitable for the movie, which is something that horror remakes often miss the mark on.

The Evil Dead opens on April 12, 2013.
