By the time students reach college, they should be past making excuses for not getting work done—or at least have bulletproof excuses. Susan Paola Fadel Correia, 22, went way over the top, telling police that she was kidnapped and held hostage by three men for 24 hours just to avoid handing in a school project on time.

Fadel, a native of Belém in northern Brazil, admitted that she actually spent the day at her friend’s house. Her reasoning for the preposterous story is that she didn’t want her mother to know she was struggling in school out of fear she would get angry. Fadel’s been charged with making false accusations, which could mean six months in jail, so her mom is going to be extra pissed about those lawyer fees.

Here’s a word to the wise: If you can’t get over on your university, you probably can’t get over on the police, either. Do your damn schoolwork.
