After a summer soft launch, Skype has officially opened its App Directory, where users can download third-party apps integrated into the video-conferencing experience. Available options include simple video recording apps and even faxing solutions.

Additionally, Skype is releasing SkypeKit For Desktop, a devkit of its video APIs, which would allow developers to integrate Skype features—video chat, IM, etc.—into third-party desktop apps, as well as consumer electronics. In other words, Skype owner Microsoft is letting folks run wild with the Skype technology, fostering innovation with its company’s DNA and thus leaving the possibilities to be limitless.
