Given that Google is the initial portal through which millions of people view the web, you can bet the folks in Mountainview spend a lot of time making sure they get the homepage just right. The company rolled out a new look for Google.com today, with some subtle changes and others more immediately obvious.

The first thing you'll notice is that there's now a black bar along the top forming the background of the options menu. The Google logo itself has also been shrunken slightly, and the that used to appear just below the search buttons have now been moved to the bottom of the page. In a blog post, Chris Wiggins, Google's Creative Director, says the changes were inspired by principles of focus, elasticity and effortlessness. Expect similar design changes across Google products in the near future.
