The big-budget game of keeping up with the Joneses in Hollywood seems to have switched from
Snow White to
Cobra Commander Julian Assange. The
WikiLeaks founder is the new buzzword around Tinsel Town as there are development projects in the works from the likes of
Alex Gibney (
Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room) and
Andrew Fowler, respectively. Now,
DreamWorks is getting into the WikiLeaks game after buying the rights to
Inside WikiLeaks: My Time With Julian Assange at the World's Most Dangerous Website and
WikiLeaks: Inside Julian Assange's War on Secrecy and are planning a dramatic thriller based on his story.
Deadline caught wind of the details surrounding DreamWorks strategy. There is no writer assigned yet, but the idea is to go all
Social Network-y and use the books as raw material alongside other sources so they can skip out on having to secure rights directly from Assange. Seeing that the hacktivist du jour has his own legal woes, the ending to this tale still has to come to fruition. But as compelling a figure as Assange is, if DreamWorks applies the same skill that was given to
Mark Zuckerberg then
The Assange Identity could become the next big hit at the Oscars.
