Disney and Pixar—sit down. The most important force in contemporary animation is Hayao Miyazaki, and he's had the title for years now. Those other studios have produced quality animated films, but Miyazaki creates great films, period. For proof, look no further than Spirited Away.

New Yorkers eager to explore Miyazaki's filmography are in luck this weekend because Carnegie Hall will screen two shorts—House Hunting and Mon Mon the Water Spider—both of which have never been screened in the U.S. before.

House Hunting tells the story of a young girl leaving the city, themes explored in Spirited Away. Mon Mon the Water Spider seems of a piece with Miyazaki's most recent feature-length, the oceanic fantasy Ponyo.
