#6: DOOLEY WILSON AS SAM IN CASABLANCA (1942)

You could argue that the central romance in Casablanca, that of Humphrey Bogart’s Rick and Ingrid Bergman’s Ilsa, wouldn’t have happened without piano player deluxe Sam. When Rick migrated from Paris to Morocco, he brought his buddy Sam along for the ride, and, as the in-house music supplier in the film’s key setting, Rick’s Cafe Americain, Dooley Wilson’s Sam provides the jams for his main man. As Rick and Ilsa’s love rekindles inside Cafe Americain, there’s Sam, playing “As Time Goes By.” Be thankful they didn’t get one of those Amos ‘n’ Andy guys for the part.
