With his latest offering, “Forfeit,” L.A.-based singer Gallant delivers another beautiful bit of hazy R&B. Short and loosely shaped, it feels like it could come from the depths of a lost J Dilla hard-drive, high on bubbling, jazzy atmospherics (thanks to talented, chameleonic producer Felix Snow) though well-written enough to be more than an exercise in mood alone: “I want your problems/I want everything that’s bad about you/Deadly, and sovereign/I’ll eat your words and make the room for more.” Another fine addition to a catalog that gains greater stylistic definition with each release.
