J. Cole made a huge splash when he dropped his surprise album KOD last week, which included breaking a Spotify record in the U.S. with the album's title track. On top of that, he broke Drake's record for the most streams of an album in 24 hours on Apple Music with 64.5 million streams, dethroning Views as the best opening day numbers on the streaming platform in the U.S..
KOD achieved the same on Spotify, too, garnering 36.6 million streams in 24 hours. The album is looking like it'll debut at the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200, too, according to Hits Daily Double. While not confirmed, the projected numbers for KOD are highly impressive, with an estimated 140-155k pure album sales alone. Combined with the album-equivalent units from streams, the album is expected to debut at No. 1 with 375-390,000 units.
If the album does indeed hit the No. 1 spot thanks to its impressive first week, it'll be Cole's third album in a row to debut at the No. 1 spot, following in the footsteps of 2014 Forest Hills Drive and 2016's 4 Your Eyez Only. While 4 Your Eyez Only managed to move more units (492,000) in its first week, it's still a huge debut for the album, especially considering the expedited release cycle.
