Last month, Joey Badass unleashed a fantastic tribute to the late and great Prince. With his gorgeous send-up of "When Doves Cry," arguably one of Prince's finest moments, he refused to play it safe. Backed by a full band, Joey showed off some impressive lyrical talents by mixing in new verses amongst the original hook.

The live performance, which was filmed as part of Triple J's Like a Version series, now has a studio version to match it. Titled "Thugz Cry," the studio version of the tribute is produced by 1-900 and NasteeLuvzYou and features additional vocals from Kirk Knight and Raury. The studio version definitely lives up to the version performed live, especially as the producers mix in some luscious sounds into the mix, letting the huge sound of the live performance remain intact.

It's incredibly impressive that he managed to send-up Prince's Purple Rain classic while making it something new, too.

Recently, Joey tweeted, "Rap is in a very trash state rn with very exceptions that don't even get the love and attention that they deserve." His comments were met with a mixed response, with many criticizing his decision to work with XXXTentacion.
