After winning his first Grammy award (Best Traditional R&B Performance for "Redbone") on Sunday night, Donald Glover is back today with a treat for longtime Childish Gambino fans. The actor/rapper/singer/TV show creator is adding his 2011 project EP, which was previously only available as a free download, to streaming services. According to Billboard, the five track project will be on streaming services today, January 30. Glover and his team is releasing the project via distribution platform Stem.
“Artists should never be in the position where the industry hinders their creative output,” Glover's manager, Wolf Taylor, tells Billboard. “Our goal is to give our artists the ability to release content when and where they want. Partnering with Stem has allowed us to maintain our major label resources while providing us with a platform to independently release our special projects.” The EP project came out in March 2011, prior to Gambino's official debut album Camp but after the self-released mixtape Culdesac, which was released in 2010.
It's been a busy week for Donald Glover, who confirmed that he was still planning to retire the Childish Gambino name, although there is "another project" on the way. Last week, Glover announced that he and his management/creative agency Wolf + Rothstein had signed a deal with RCA Records. Just yesterday, we learned that Quincy Jones would like Glover to play him in a 10-part TV biopic, would probably be incredible.
