Ranking the 50 States Based on Their Contribution to Popular Music

50. Wyoming

Artists Who Were Born There: Scott Avett, John Perry Barlow, Ronnie Bedford
Bands Formed There: The Lillingtons

John Perry Barlow, who wrote a handful of Grateful Dead lyrics (mostly to second-tier songs), was born in Sublette County, while Scott Avett of the Avett Brothers was born in Cheyenne. Jackson Pollock, abstract painter and drunk driver, was born in Cody, and his painting "White Light" was incorporated into the cover of Ornette Coleman's 1960 album Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation. The Lillingtons, a Ramones-ish (that's a compliment) pop-punk band from the mid-'90s formed in Newcastle. Apparently nothing else of real musical significance has ever happened in Wyoming. Maybe Dick Cheney shot all the state's musicians in the face.
