With the recent announcement coming out of E3 that we are getting a new Killer Instinct title, we thought now would be as good a time as any to brush up on our combo breakers.
Fatalities and over the top cartoon gore may provide some naysayers with the perfect litmus test for how video game violence is putting holes in the ozone, or whatever else the outrage of the week is, but we all know that it's camp. Pure and simple.
While those suffering from manufactured, imaginary affronts, are fanning themselves on their fainting couches, we will be enjoying the The 50 Craziest Video Game Fatalities Ever.

50. Tattoo Assassins (Arcade, 1994)
Remember how dumb we thought "Friendships" were in Mortal Kombat II? Well, Tattoo Assassins took the idea of being "funny" in a fighting game WAY overboard when they put these bizarre finishers at the end of rounds. Instead of, you know, actually finishing your opponents off, how about turning them into a geisha or an Elvis impersonator? And this is why you've never even heard of Tattoo Assassins before today.
49. Clay Fighter 63 1/3 (N64, 1997)
Clay Fighter was nothing more than a running joke amongst gamers, but at least it was a decent fighting excursion. We laughed until we cried after we pitted an Elvis impersonator against a raging piece of caramel taffy. And that theme song? iPod morning playlist worthy.
Their take on Santa Claus was slightly creepy (wait, scratch that. He was ALL the way creepy) and severely lacking in the clothing department. And ya know what? That's why we loved the big guy. His "Claytalities" included jumping into the air, landing on you, and crapping out your remains in brutal fashion. Next up, Santa unleashes his twin and they belly flop that ass to Kingdom Come. SANTA'S GONNA SIT ON YO LAP!
48. Shadow of the Colossus (PS2, 2005)
This is a much more shocking fatality once you've beaten the game and realized you did a horrible, horrible thing by killing all these beasts. (Albeit in the name of love.) Oh well, death happens. What makes this fatality stick with the gamer is the rare beauty of figuring out how to tackle your first colossus. It's unbelievable how emotional you'll feel after icing the giant. You don't want to do it again... and then you do. And that's what's so amazing about this game-There's beauty and sadness in these deaths. It makes the game earn its "games are art" title, no question.
47. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (GameCube, 2003)
Jeez, Link. We didn't know you had it in you. Link doesn't just stab his nemesis to death with this brutal fatality. No, that would be going too easy on Ganon. Instead, he launches himself in the air and plunges his sword right between Ganon's eyes, turning the pig warlord to stone. Link may look cute when he's all cel-shaded and shit, but that warrior has the eyes of a killer. A killer! We wouldn't want to mess with him, either.
46. The Punisher (Multi-Platform, 2005)
The Punisher video game had so many cool executions, that many times it was hard to not kill someone. Such was the case with this fatality, where The Punisher would throw his enemy in a pool inhabited by an eel. Next thing you know the fish is sending excruciatingly painful amounts of electricity through the guy's junk. Yikes.
45. Limbo (Multi-Platform, 2010-2011))
Limbo left an indelible mark on our psyche when it hit the 360 way back when. The art style, quiet atmosphere and simple play took us by surprise and kept us in awe. It also left us defenseless. We played as a lil boy so we didn't think anything drastic could happen to the kid if we lost a life. Turns out when he dies, the gruesome details are acted out as if they're real. Bear traps + little kids = so not cool.
44. Street Fighter IV (Arcade, 2008; Multi-Platform, 2009)
Akuma is that dude. He's the one shoto character we know who prefers to whoop ass with shoes on. Let that be a lesson to you other shotos! Real men don't fight barefoot! The Raging Demon is a bona fide killer when you're pulling off his super rendition.
But when Akuma is feeling extra violent, that's when we do the unthinkable. Skate on one foot, smile for the camera, then commit unspeakable horrors in the darkness of hell. We don't wanna know what Akuma's actually doing to his opponent during that whole sequence. Some things are best left to the imagination.
43. Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks (Multi-Platform, 2005)
You hear that? It's the sound of thousands of PETA members dialing Ed Boon's home phone. We're surprised they didn't organize any protests against this fatality. Kung Lao does some pretty sweet magic tricks for the kiddies when he's not slicing his foes in half with his bladed top hat. We're guessing he went to the drawing board one day and realized the "Bunny in the Hat" routine could amaze...and destroy. Poor bunny.
42. Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition (Multi-Platform, 2011)
Oni seems to be the godlike lovechild of Akuma and Gouken, which is a recipe for disaster and calamity. YES! Just how we like it. When footage surfaced of Oni's ultra's we fell in love. Wanna end your opponent the right way? Do you wish to send your friend's sodium levels up to dangerous levels? Bust out this move and let your insignia emblazon the back of your dead foe. SHOOSH x9000!
41. Bioshock 2 (Multi-Platform, 2010)
In Bioshock 2 you're given the option of saving or killing Grace. Sure, the latter results in some negative video game karma, but Grace's fatality is pretty gruesome. This is due to the fact that there are mutiple ways of killing Grace. Electrocuting, burning, drilling--the list goes on and on. You'll probably feel horrible after killing her (or not, whatever) but hey--anything goes in the underwater world of Rapture.
40. Mortal Kombat II (Multi-Platform, 1993)
Talk about an in-joke. We all know about sound programmer Dan Forden, who would occasionally pop his head in and yell, "toasty" after an uppercut or Scorpion's skull fatality. But what about Fergus McGovern, who could only be seen in the Sega Genesis version? Well, 'ol Fergus worked on the port of the game and because of that, got his own sneak appearance. Yeah, it's weird and it makes no sense, but it's awesome. Why? Because Mortal Kombat is awesome. We thought that would have been the obvious answer.
39. Mortal Kombat (Multi-Platform, 1992-2011)
Mortal Kombat is just insane. Need proof? Look no further than this bizarre fatality where our favorite movie star defies the laws of human anatomy, by knocking off three heads in a row from a single body. We know Johnny Cage is all about the ladies but if he said, "gimme some head" before doing this fatality to a dude, we wouldn't be surprised.
38. Manhunt (Multi-Platform, 2003)
Every execution in Manhunt is extremely over-the-top but this one takes the cake. James Cash basically places the sickle right underneath his enemy's private place, slicing it with no remorse whatsoever. Guys, we understand if after performing this execution you squirmed a little. It's ok; so did we.
37. Survival Arts (Arcade, 1993)
A baseball bat can be a deadly weapon. For example, The Italian mob used it extensively to break body parts of bums who owed them money. Just watch The Deadliest Warrior to see how badly they brutalized fools with the wooden wonder. But never on that mob episode did they show a baseball bat making a body EXPLODE upon impact. That brutal fatality makes this shitty game worth at least one look. Batter up. KABOOM!
36. Killer Instinct (Arcade, 1994; Multi-Platform, 1995)
Fulgore is a beast. The metallic clanking of his walk; his ability to teleport and his strange blond ponytail, makes him a horrifying opponent. But then this happens. His head rolls away to reveal a machine gun that blasts you to smithereens. Seriously, we don't even know what to say to something like that other than, well, yikes. The only way you can hope to beat him is with a ca-ca-ca-ca-combo breaker. And even that we wouldn't rely on in a pinch. Fulgore, you scare us.
35. Primal Rage (Arcade, 1994)
Chaos is a disgusting character. Not only are toxic farting and projectile vomit on his list of moves, but he also has a nasty fatality that would make R. Kelly proud. We're having a hard time thinking of something worse than turning into ash from an ape's piss. And...well, we're going to have to keep thinking about it. That shit is gross.
34. Time Killers (Arcade, 1992)
Sure, go ahead. Call Time Killers a Mortal Kombat ripoff. But the truth of the matter is, this game came out in the same year as that famous fighter, so Strata definitely had something going for it before the whole world went fatality crazy. The thing that's a shame is that all of the character's fatalities are basically the same.
Chop, chop, chop, chop, chop. It may not seem nearly as shocking today as it did back then, but just put yourself in the early '90s when the most brutal game we had was Street Fighter II. And then THIS came along. Yeah, chop, chop, chop, chop, chop, doesn't seem so weak now, does it? It was a video game revolution back then because these fatalities were f**kin' nuts.
33. Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks (Multi-Platform, 2005)
Greatest idea in the world? Make an action/adventure game where we get to control Mortal Kombat's favorite monks. This thing was pretty addictive back in the day. We can't count how many times we ran through this game with our college dorm mate. You know, when he was getting high or whatever. Anyway, a lot of thought went into the fatalities in this game. Whoever had the brainpower to cook up this hilarious final kill deserves a hefty raise. Uppercut off someone's head then Bend It Like Beckham into their chest? Incredible.
32. Cosmic Carnage (Sega 32X, 1994)
Cosmic Carnage for the 32X was not a good game by any means. (Were any games on the 32X any good?) But Naruto's arms and body severing was flashy and bloody, which is what we like to see in our fatalities. A whole lot of blood flying with some pizazz. If only the computer would give us a break and let us win for a change. This game was harder than an old stripper's breast implants.
31. Resident Evil 5 (Multi-Platform, 2009)
Resident Evil 5 featured tons of death sequences that made our stomachs turn. But the one fatality that made us douse ourselves in holy water was this one. Chris gives Shiva the word and makes a run for the override lever. Now, if you're co-op partner lapsed for about three seconds too long (probably ogling Shiva's facial goodies), Wesker turned a Carl Lewis long jump into something horrific. "Oh snap" fits this kill perfectly. You spin my head round, baby, right round...
30. Samurai Showdown V (Multi-Platform, 2003)
This game deserves some cred for its violent swordplay and unique roster. Some people preferred hadouken's while others liked to attack with ninja spears. Another group thought it was cooler to slice and dice opponents into bite-size pieces. That group stuck by the Samurai Showdown arcade cabinet. In its fifth iteration Haohmaru unleashed the beast via his blade and got "half." Sucks to be the one at the end of Haohmaru's blade.
29. God of War III (PS3, 2010)
This Hades ain't the guy your little cousins watched when Disney gave us its cutesy version of Hercules. God of War 3 featured a nasty version of the dude and his skin made ours crawl. Once the boss fight with Hades neared its conclusion, we got a hold of his blades and proceeded to borrow his soul forever. Took us a minute to yank the thing out of the big guy but we got it done. Shang Tsung, eat your heart out.
28. Eternal Champions (Genesis, 1993)
Eternal Champions for the Genesis is a forgotten fighter but we'll never forget the first time we saw a character get thrown into a fan. There's nothing like watching blood splatter all over the floor in a gooey display of flesh meets blade. Bloody disgusting. That's why EC totally ruled in the '90s. A classic to this day.
27. God of War III (PS3, 2010)
Kratos isn't too fond of his family. It's a safe bet that he won't be passing the turkey to father Zeus at Thanksgiving. (Ya know, since he killed him and everything.) What he did to his brother Hercules in the final moments of their epic encounter solidified that. Hercules hoisted the very ground his brother walked on in an attempt to end it all. But Kratos went all greek gangsta on him by using his gauntlets to slam that foundation right onto his prone body. Talk about reconstructive facial surgery. The operation was a resounding success...not really.
26. Mortal Kombat 9 (Multi-Platfrom, 2011)
Ninjas and robots make a pretty neat combo, don't they? If Sektor is anything to go by, then we're ready to don a sweet cyborg outfit and start our Lin Kuei training ASAP. Once Sektor has his opponents doing the "Finish Him!" dance, greatness ensues. He shoots some electronic doo-dad into their chest, hits a few buttons then BAM! They become the bloodiest scarecrow you've ever seen. Seems like a better solution to keeping crows away, if ya ask us.
25. Manhunt 2 (Multi-Platfrom, 2007)
We're having a hard time thinking of a worse way to go out than getting a plastic bag put over your face until you suffocate to death. We mean, think about it. You're going along on your normal day of hunting a human being when, bam, somebody sneaks up on YOU and strangles the life out of your sorry ass. And now the hunter has become the prey. What we find most disparaging about this is just HOW simple a death it is. No bullets are wasted, nor does a blade have to be shoved in just the right spot. It's simply some guy taking his groceries out of a bag and killing you with it. How humbling is that?
24. Wu-Tang: Shaolin Style (PlayStation, 1999)
You didn't know Wu-Tang put out a fighting game? For shame, homie. Imagine playing Power Stone-style battle royal matches, but with 100 times the amount of blood and guts.We entered the 36 Chambers and cut old masters, crushed ninjas with sledgehammers and got our ass handed to us by afro sporting chicks. Ol' Dirty Bastard was our go to guy for one reason and one reason only: his penchant for ripping heads off and doing a drunken jig right after. Protect ya neck, kid.
23. God of War III
Not even the Sun is safe from the wrath of a fallen God. Helios was the living embodiment of that good ol' bright star in the sky. But once he got brought down to Earth, his light got snuffed out in the worst way. Gotta give it up to his undead minions for trying to him. That still didn't stop us from getting rid of them and making Helios' head a part of our inventory. He really thought Kratos couldn't get by his bright ass headlights? He thought wrong...dead wrong.
22. Mortal Kombat 9 (Multi-Platform, 2011)
Rejoice for the black ninjas! Cyrax still sports his dreads even under the guise of a cyborg assassin. Respect bruh, respect. He gets even more of our undying adoration 'cause of his secret fatality in the latest Mortal Kombat. He enters in a code we wish we knew, spits out his cyber net and waits for the best part. This time, it goes through the unfortunate victim instead of ensnaring them. Remember that scene in the first Resident Evil movie where the commander gets sliced into pieces? Well, yeah.
21. Dead Space 2 (Multi-Platform, 2011)
We're not done with this game yet, folks. (Not by a long shot.) Necromorph vomit doesn't sound very enticing, does it? Yeah, we thought so. Once you come across a necromorph that can't contain its last meal and you're near death, bad things go down. You get laced with some alien goo and start blowing chunks of your own. Soon after, you're face down in the stuff, dead as a doornail. Hell of a way to go, huh?
20. Blood Storm (Arcade, 1994)
While BloodStorm's ultimate legacy might be that it sucked ass, its fatalities were some of the sickest known to man. And this mind exploder was just another in a series of grotesque enders. Putting a bomb on someone's head is a pretty scary way to die.
Especially since you know that when that clock hits zero it's kaput for your dome. It's almost on some Jigsaw-type shit. (Though a little too primitive for his tastes, which makes it fit perfectly on BloodStorm's list.) Sure it was a crappy game, but remember this Christmas to tell your parents to buy you BloodStorm. Or go to HELL!
19. Resident Evil 4 (Multi-Platform, 2005)
A chainsaw to the dome? Yeah, that's pretty scary. A chainsaw to the dome by a guy wearing a sack over his head? Man, that's straight up terrifying! Do we even have to tell you why? Just think about that for a second. You're already creeped out by the strange residents you've killed because of the tentacles exploding from their heads. Then some maniac wearing a sack over his head comes out of nowhere and chases you down. WITH A CHAINSAW. As soon as we heard that revving noise coming toward us we knew we only had two options: get the hell out of there or stand our ground. Being that we aren't pussies we often stood our ground...to head lopping results.
18. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Multi-Platform, 2009)
The final sequence in Modern Warfare 2 could pass for a summer blockbuster finale. After catching up with Shepard and trying to (unsuccessfully) subdue him, we found ourselves hanging on for dear life. Getting a knife stuffed into your chest will do that to you. Once Shepard and Price got into a scuffle (that Shepard got the better of) our moment of truth was finally realized. We pulled the knife out of our dying soldier and flung it right at Shepard's head, Matrix-style. Man, that felt good! The imaginary round of applause we heard in our head made it all worth it. Knife you very much!
17. Dead Space 2 (Multi-Platform, 2011)
Wanna know what's NOT the cure for insomnia? Dead Space. Survival horror came back in a big way when this series was first introduced in 2008. Once the sequel dropped in 2011, gamers were treated to even more sickening death sequences. Such is the case when Issac Clarke comes across the Tripod, and must shoot its weak point to escape its clutches. But what if you can't do it in time? Well, you get to see our hero get fed a deluxe helping of alien claw. See you later, Issac's head.
16. Mortal Kombat 9 (Multi-Platform, 2011)
Quan-Chi's the only sorcerer we know who could handle himself in a bar fight. Sure, he has the ability to hypnotize his foes and make them do his dirty work. But he can kick ass too. Case in point: his fatality. The fact that this limb torture keeps going well after the fight announcer has awarded the victory makes it even more awesome. Value that you have two legs after viewing this fatality. You'll grow to appreciate walking more.
15. War Gods (Arcade, 1996; Multi-Platform, 1997)
The sheer scope of this fatality is what makes it stand out. The rest of War Gods totally sucks, but this fatality from Cy-5 (ha, get it? Cy-5, "sci-fi"?) is 100 percent badass. Ordering a spaceship to come and melt his victims makes you wonder, if he had that kind of killing machine from the beginning why did he even bother fighting in the first place? Hmm...only in video games. Only in video games.
14. Mortal Kombat 3 (Multi-Platform, 1995)
Usually, a fatality is done upon one person and one person only. Smoke broke the rules with this fatality, unleashing an arsenal of explosives that destroy the earth. Yes, the EARTH. What did we ever do to you, Smoke?
13. Tattoo Assassins (Arcade, 1994)
Tattoo Assassins was insane. So insane it was never put into wide release. But how could it? We mean, just the whole premise of it was nuts. People fighting each other with the tattoos on their bodies? Umm...okay. But out of all that we got Truck's cool fatality, where a snake came out of his stomach tattoo and swallowed its victim whole. Sure, it's just a variant of Liu Kang's awesome dragon fatality. But did a dragon come out of Liu Kang's FREAKING CHEST? No. No, it did not.
12. God of War (PS2, 2005)
Taking "in the face" to violent new heights, we got our first glimpse of just how brutal Kratos could be with this first boss encounter. He basically skewered a mama hydra through the eye and watched as the beast's two children's heads exploded. Quaint central character for a video game series we got here, huh? It was at that point that we knew nobody was f**kin' with Kratos. Not even the gods themselves. They really didn't have a chance. Not with a monster like this as their villain. Yeesh.
11. Mortal Kombat 9 (Multi-Platform, 2011)
Yeah, yeah, we know. The "toasty Fatality" is a classic finisher for undead, ninja Scorpion. But if you've gotten your hands on this dude in the new Mortal Kombat, then you know that his first fatality has officially been surpassed by Nether Gates. We weren't prepared to watch Scorpion stuff a kunai into someone then punish 'em with the Leonidas kick straight into the Netherworld. When they fell into one hole and came out the other, jaws hit the floor. Dude held his skinless opponent in the air while we sat in complete silence. Then we exploded into "Oh shit!" and "Did you see that?" Still in disbelief that fatality ever happened.
10. Mortal Kombat 9 (Multi-Platform, 2011)
Academy Awards deserve to be showcased in the biggest star's living rooms, bedrooms and maybe even above a toilet in their bathrooms. Johnny Cage (famous for his action movie knockoffs with pun intended titles) prefers using his trophy in battle. Cage karate chops his victim's head in half then slams his statue of film excellence into whatever brain matter remains. Wonder what this move would look like if Denzel took the role of good ol' Johnny? My Man!
9. The Punisher (Multi-Platform, 2005)
There's an assortment of insane fatalities in The Punisher video game. But the forklift one is probably one of, if not the most, brutal. If the bad guy doesn't cooperate with The Punisher (which is often the case) he rides over the guy's chest, then reverses and crushes his head. Remember kids: when a guy wants answers and you're underneath a forklift, it's better to be cooperative, always.
8. Resident Evil 2 (Playstation, 1998)
Although the game made it extremely easy to kill the crocodile, on the off chance you didn't you were in for a deadly surprise. Whether you were Leon or Claire both met the same end, their whole body being digested by an overly large amphibian. Reminiscing on this fatality is sure to result in nightmares. Even 15 years later.
7. Mortal Kombat II (Multi-Platform, 1993)
So we all know how lame Lui Kang's "Fatality" was in the first Mortal Kombat. We're guessing that Ed Boon and his crew decided to make up for that lame finisher by upping the ante to 1000. The words "Enter The Dragon" immediately came to mind when Lui Kang transformed into a dragon. Did he burn his foe to a crisp? Nah, too much work. Take a bite out of crime and leave the bottom portion of the body standing. And this is another reason why the '90s ruled.
6. Xenophage: Alien Bloodsport (PC, 1995)
We're not sure if the creature in Xenophage is a crab at all. But we're not sure what any of the creatures in this relatively unknown fighter are. This game is beyond weird but this fatality is also as brutal as they come. The "crab" monster walks over, puts its, um, snout, on the victim's head and, well, we're not sure what he does from there. But it involves sucking and slurping noises and the victim being headless a second later. And afterward the announcer shouts, "Meat!" Yeah, Xenophage is pretty weird. And awesome. Weird and awesome. And that's why we love it to death.
5. Mortal Kombat II (Multi-Platform, 1993)
Mortal Kombat II had a bunch of funny and silly antics after the screen grew black and the announcer screamed, "Finish him!" So much so, that some fans balked at the idea of "Babalities" and "Friendships" in their fighter. But nobody balked at this fatality where Kung Lao took off his razor sharp hat and did one quick slice from head to groin, ripping the poor victim in half. That silenced people pretty quickly. It was so brutal in fact, that it almost makes us wanna hurl from thinking about it. Kung Lao, you're one sick bastard, you know that?
4. Bioshock (Multi-Platform, 2007)
The protagonist beats Andrew Ryan so badly that the golf club breaks. This fatality was both physically and mentally painful to watch. Discovering that we were essentially a pawn for Atlas' benefit but still having to brutally murder Ryan, was a twisted moment to be viewed. The epiphany came but it came too late. Now, we had to kill Ryan. And it was nothing near kind.
3. Killer Instinct (Arcade, 1994; Multi-Platform, 1995)
Death by boobies? Yeah. We're pretty sure that's how we want to go when it's our time. Though, we're not quite sure how it worked in the end. Were her ta-ta's so nice that her victims had heart attacks from seeing them? Or were her breasts so crooked and nasty they made hearts explode at their ghastly sight? Either way, it still beats dying by acid urine from some massive monkey. (Or decapitation and spine removal. Hint, hint.)
2. Mortal Kombat (Arcade, 1992)
A big part of us believes that the Mortal Kombat series never would have been as big as it is today without this fatality in the first game. Dude didn't just decapitate the poor fellow (or madam, if he was facing Sonya Blade): he ripped the head off AND pulled out the spinal cord. Now that's freaking disgusting. And awesome. It's the fatality that put Mortal Kombat on the map; for better or worse. We still look back at it and cringe and for a game that came out in 1992 that's saying something. Sub-Zero, wins.
1. God of War III (PS3, 2010)
No one likes to see their own ass kicking first hand. It's a spirit killer and more importantly, a manhood destroyer. Imagine how Poseidon, the God of the Sea, must have felt when he got treated to a front-row seat of his own end. Headbutts, punches, kicks and then...the eye gouging. *shudders* This QTE stood out even more because it took place in the very first moments of the game. How's that for an intro? Or as Mobb Deep would say, "the start of your ending!"
