[Comic-Con] Some Good News and Some Bad News for the Nintendo 3DS

Okay, first the good news. Mario Kart 7 on the 3DS is amazing. The hang-gliding, the underwater racing, the controls, the tracks, it’s all great. Just as you’d expect.

But Super Mario 3D Land, not so much. As one of the games I bought the struggling handheld specifically for, I have to say that I was beyond disappointed when I played the game. It really pisses me the hell off.

For starters, the 3D is absolutely useless. Turn it off completely. The main problem is, it makes it really hard to judge jumps, and for a Mario game, that’s a major problem. Jumping is Mario’s bread and butter. And if a Mario game can’t nail that, then it’s screwed. And this game can’t nail that.

I still remember the first time I ever played Super Mario 64. The perspective had changed entirely, but it still felt like Mario. Judging distance wasn’t a problem as it all just fell into place naturally. But with my brief play through with THIS game, I died multiple times on some flipping floors—as seen in Super Mario Galaxy—and it was so frustrating, that I just gave up and left.

And while you may say, well, you just suck at Mario. No, that couldn’t be farther from the truth. I’ve gotten every single achievement and star in every single Mario game ever released, so this is coming from a true blue, Nintendo fanboy, Mario veteran, and I’m telling you, this game just doesn’t FEEL right to me.

It shouldn’t be so tough to land jumps, and while yeah, it might be something I just have to work at, it’ll be a first for me in a Mario game, as these games are usually so intuitive. But this one, not so much. I kind of want to trade in my 3DS already. Thank God Mario Kart is awesome. I don’t know what I’d DO if that one looked like it sucked.

There are no achievements in Mario. Not to mention, every other preview about the game says that 3D actually makes the jumps EASIER, and their main gripe is that it makes using 3D a necessity in some areas. You are full of shit.

I played it and it felt great. I don't know what to say about your difficulties with the jumping, but I wouldn't write an article just to tell that the jumping is harder with the 3D on... I remember the flipping floors on Mario Galaxy 2 and they were VERY difficult. Please, write articles contemplating the whole game, not just the jumping functionality that didn't work with your fingers.

But here's the thing. I'm NOT a loser at Mario. I've beaten every game in the series to perfection. 120 stars in Mario Sunshine, one of the hardest in the series. 242 stars in Super Mario Galaxy 2. I'm a Mario veteran, dude. And this game just didn't FEEL right to me. Believe you me, it disheartens me more than it makes me feel good about it. And I did turn the 3D all the way up, but it hurts my eyes. 3D is one of the features I can't stand with the system. And Nintendo apparently realizes this, too, as they're downplaying the 3D in their next generation of games.

You mention you had a brief time playing with the game but how "brief" was it? 5 minutes, 10 minutes? From every other preview I read, they handle the jumps fairly well. From my understanding, losing multiple lives in a Mario game is perfectly fine. If you got frustrated over one area, you go back and try again until you achieve it. Any true Mario fans knows this fundamental rule. I encountered several platforming issues with many 3D Mario games. Guess what? I got frustrated but I continue on until I nailed it. For example, in Mario Galaxy 2, the controls for Spring Mario and the Bird mini-game weren't up to par from the rest of the game. Does it mean it that the game is terrible or disappointing because of those issues?

I feel you, and maybe getting to know this game will take a lot more time, but I've always been able to tear through every Mario game I've ever played because the controls are so tight and spot on. I didn't feel that way with this one. It felt alien and strange. Oh, and Spring Mario wasn't too bad. But rolling on the metal ball dominated my soul until I finally nailed it. I still hate that part.

I don't get it. Why are you complaining about it being hard to jump, after you said you turned the 3D off. The 3D is there for a REASON, this is a game that actually USES IT. It's called Super Mario 3D Land for christ sake. "The 3D is useless, turn it off", Well, if it's such an integral part of gameplay, then it's not too useless now is it?

Well... it is called Mario *3D.* You turn the slider off, then complain that you can't judge the distance in between jumps? You make no sense. Of course you can't really judge it if it's based on a component you TURNED OFF. *facepalm*
