You've all heard the line "buy less, but buy better." Well that's all a huge crock. Take a look at the men's style landscape now, and you'll see it's vastly different than the scene two or three years ago. The stuff we'd swear we'd hold onto forever has now become totally wack to wear. Maybe in a couple of years, we'll rediscover them. But for now, in the closet they stay.

Don't get us wrong, there are plenty of things that will always be cool—like leather jackets and Jordans—but not everything has that kind of staying power when it comes to what's considered "in style." To prove our point, we rounded up these 10 "Timeless" Trends That Suck Now.

Bowties

What Replaced It: Casual, Square-End Neckties

Remember when "neo-prep" was enjoying a resurgence? Dudes went on tweed rides, wore seersucker in the summer, and learned how to tie real, actual bowties. Then they realized how silly they looked with a short-sleeve buttondown or pretty much anything that isn't a tuxedo. Don't worry, when you're a senior citizen, you can rock the shit out of them again without looking like a tool. For now, just let the neckwear hang for a while and opt for the tie-less look. It's what all the cool dudes are doing, apparently.

Wingtips With Everything

What Replaced It: Plain-Toe Shoes

Brogues before hoes man. That was the mantra. No one could fuck with your beefy wingtips and you wore them with everything. You wore them without socks and your pants were always cuffed twice above them. Except you realized they were staining your feet brown and actually were kind of uncomfortable after a while. Also, you got tired of the intricate broguing quick. So you either went crawling back to the sneaker game or copped an equally luxe pair of plaintoe oxford shoes—just as versatile, without any of the fanciful designs.

Shawl-Collar Cardigans

What Replaced It: Fisherman's Sweaters

This looked awesome with your beard and side part, until one morning, you woke up and realized you were never going to live your dream of being Ernest Hemingway. And also... buttons man, fuck. Ain't nobody got time for that! So you trimmed your beard, copped a crewneck fisherman's knit sweater, and wear that over everything these days.

Toggle Coats

What Replaced It: Topcoats

You were glad you copped a toggle coat for the winter, and then once the weather got a little more temperate, found less reason to wear it. You also didn't realize that since you're not five years old, perhaps grown-up buttons and a proper lapel did more wonders than this seafaring staple.

Double-Breasted Jackets

What Replaced It: Unstructured Sportcoats

The "Italian sprezzatura" thing never quite caught on, and Ralph Lauren Rugby went out of business. As much as you convinced yourself you could wear this thing—brass buttons and all—with jeans and chinos, you couldn't help but feel slightly dickish when you walked into class or the office. Perhaps, you've got for soft-shouldered, patch-pocketed single-breasted blazer already. You wear it with casual button downs and solid tees, and it does its job. You feel more comfortable, and less like a fashion victim.

Desert Boots

What Replaced It: Crepe-Soled Everything

These soft-soled creepers were one of the "essential" items every guy needed to transition from unlovable slob to #menswear inductee. Throw a slim-fitting oxford and a pair of A.P.C. New Standards on, and the uniform is complete. Then, designers like Mark McNairy and Rancourt started fucking up the game with crepe-soled double monks and loafers, giving guys plenty of options to get their crepe on, and with better-made materials.

Bright Chinos

What Replaced It: Navy Chinos

Bitches say I'm tacky daddy; pants look like Laffy Taffy. Even Cam'ron learned that subtle style is better. Opt for a navy pair of chinos instead. They're not boring like khaki, and go with more than black.

V-Neck Sweaters

What Replaced It: Crewneck Sweatshirts

Admit it—no self-respecting guy actually wore these things. They were so awkward, like the red-headed stepchild of knitwear. You had to have a certain build, had to wear a button down shirt undearneath (or v-neck tee) in order for it to not look weird, and often they were more uncomfortable than stylish. Crewneck sweatshirts are just easier to throw on, they're pretty much one step removed from a hoodie. Perhaps that's why guys have chosen those over these gross v-necks.

Tuxedo Jackets

What Replaced It: Casual Jackets

For a brief time, guys thought it was cool to take things like tuxedo jackets "out of context" and wear them with jeans, a T-shirt, and maybe velvet slippers. Then they started doing it not just to the club, but awards ceremonies. It got corny quick, and now a casually worn tux jacket is a sure sign of douchiness. Instead, wear an actual casual jacket... like a cotton bomber or Harrington.

Raw Denim

What Replaced It: Dad Jeans

All of your raw jawns have been well-worn by now. You were contemplating getting a fresh pair, but the thought of having to wear them for an entire year is just something you can't bring yourself to do again. Then dad texts you. He says he got a pair of LVC 501's. He sends you a selfie. He's in the tub. Breaking them in. Another close-up of the selvedge line. He can't wait for some "sweet fades" he says. So instead you opt for a stonewashed pair of denim and never look back.
