On Thursday, Oakland Athletics minor leaguer Michael Nolan died after suffering critical injuries stemming from a drive-by shooting on Sept. 18. He was 23 years old.

The shooting occurred in the parking lot of a Burger King on Central Avenue in Yonkers, N.Y. Witnesses have informed police that Nolan was standing by his car with some friends when a vehicle came by and fired several shots. Nolan was struck in the arm and head.

Yonkers Police Chief Charles Garner said the incident "is not a random shooting." Authorities believe a drag race may have been a catalyst.

Upon hearing the news of Nolan's passing, Athletics general manager David Forst released the following statement.

In 2014, the 6-foot-8 left-handed pitcher out of Oklahoma City University was selected by the A's in the 18th round of the amateur draft. He never got the opportunity to pitch in the minors.
