Earlier today, we basically declared former Ohio State University head football coach Woody Hayes the toughest SOB of all time. After all, the guy once made by a point about toughness by letting a turtle bite his penis! But, now, a 24-year-old female golfer from Sweden by the name of Daniela Holmqvist has us rethinking our position.
Earlier this week, Holmqvist was playing a pre-qualifying round at the ISPS Handa Australian Open in Yarralumla, Australia and trying to pitch a ball out of the rough on the fourth hole of the course when she felt something bite her on the ankle. She looked down to see a large Black Widow spider on leg and quickly swatted it away. But, within minutes, she was on the ground in pain. From there, she told several nearby caddies what had happened to her and they started calling for help. But, she sensed that the pain was only going to get worse if she didn't do something. So, rather than wait for the medics to come, she took a golf tee out of her pocket, sliced open the wound that the Black Widow had left behind, and removed as much of the spider's venom as she could.
"A clear fluid came out," she said. "It wasn't the prettiest thing I've ever done, but I had to get as much of it out of me as possible."
Her approach worked and, within a few minutes, the pain subsided. So, she did what any golfer in her position would do: She took the rest of the day off to rest and recuperate Er, okay. Actually, she did what no golfer would ever do. She picked up her clubs, had some medics follow her around for the rest of the day to make sure she didn't pass out, and finished her round. She ended up missing the cut and didn't make the Australian Open. But, by finishing up, she may have just overtaken Coach Hayes as the toughest SOB ever. What an amazing performance.
