Remember the days of sneaking a real huge bag through to carry-on? Well, your underhanded attempts at skipping out on the check-in bag charge are about to get met with a heavy tax.
On November 6, Spirit Airlines announced that it will up fees for large carry-on bags (declared at the gate) to $100. The idea is that the heavy tariff will push folks to follow through on advanced check-in registration and deter last minute mistakes. Great idea. Spirit has even stated "We truly don't want any of our customers to have to pay $100 for a bag."
In practice, this will probably just make folks angrier at the airport than we're already seeing.
