Although it has been three years since he was released from prison on federal dogfighting charges, it's still hard to separate Michael Vick, the dog killer, from Michael Vick, the football player. As hard as he's worked to clear his name, it's still synonymous with dogfighting and all of the evil things that he used to do to dogs. So, you might be surprised to hear that Vick was just allowed to purchase a dog for the first time since he was released from prison, which is something he's wanted to do for his kids' sake for a long time now. And, late yesterday, he issued a statement about it, just one day after refusing to confirm that he had, in fact, purchased a new pup.
"I understand the strong emotions by some people about our family's decision to care for a pet," he said in the statement. "As a father, it is important to make sure my children develop a healthy relationship with animals. I want to ensure that my children establish a loving bond and treat all of God's creatures with kindness and respect. Our pet is well cared for and loved as a member of our family."
The Humane Society declined to comment. But, we fully expect all the animal activists to start protesting MV again in 5, 4, 3…
