Today marks what would have been Walter Payton's 58th Birthday. After retiring as the NFL's all-time leading rusher, Payton died in 1999 at the age of 45 after a short battle with cancer. His 16,726 career rushing yards still rank second all-time today behind Emmitt Smith.

A combination of his graceful running style and his off-field relationships with fans and children earned Payton the nickname "Sweetness." Payton helped lead the Bears victory in Super Bowl XX and, yes, he was in the "Super Bowl Shuffle" video.  Without a doubt, he was one of the greatest running backs in NFL history so check out these 20 Iconic Photos of Walter Payton.
