Rathmann and Roger Ward engaged in an epic duel in the 2nd half of the 1960 Indianapolis 500. The two drivers traded the lead 14 times over the final 80 laps before Ward was forced to pit lane after wearing out his tires. This was the final Indy 500 that counted towards the Formula 1 World Championship, and the 30 total lead changes stands today as the most in track history.
