Jan Dite, now an old man, recalls his days as a young waiter working his first job at a fancyass hotel in Prague in the 1930s, which was, by his accounts, peak waiter season. As he climbs higher up the food service chain, Dite delights in learning more about the rich people he serves and admires. Dite is not a particularly wise man himself, but the movie is aware of this and drapes every moment in a biting irony typical both of what you’d expect from a European movie but also of really intelligent comedy.
