Eschewing the sci-fi/action trappings of many anime movies that get the lion's share of Western attention, Perfect Blue is a decidedly human drama with all the suspense and twists of De Palma (when he was good). The movie is about a former pop star from Japan who changes careers to become an actress. This enrages an obsessed fan, who begins to terrorize her.
Many critics have compared the movie to the works of Alfred Hitchcock, and they couldn't be more on-point. This has the terror and suspense that the master was known for, but here director Satoshi Kon mixes this white-knuckle plot with some graphically stunning animation for an experience that's wholly original. —JS
