It took a little over two weeks for the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to become one of the five highest-grossing films worldwide, Variety reports. After earning $61.8 million at the domestic box office and an additional $281.3 million overseas, Avengers: Infinity War now boasts global box office sales of $1.606 billion. The film debuted in China over the weekend.
Avatar ($2.788 billion), Titanic ($2.187 billion), Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($2.068 billion), and Jurassic World ($1.671 billion) are the four other titles included in the list of the world’s five highest-grossing films.
Those keeping an eye on box office totals likely saw it coming, as Avengers: Infinity War crossing the billion-dollar threshold became about as inevitable as an MCU sequel with each box office record it smashed. There were predictions of the film hitting the $1 billion mark as early as May 4.
For moviegoers suffering from MCU fatigue, Melissa McCarthy and Gabrielle Union offered alternatives to the Thanos-like box office dominance of Infinity War. McCarthy’s Life of the Party earned $18.5 million during its opening weekend, while Union’s action/suspense vehicle Breaking In brought in $16.5 million.
