Avengers: Infinity War director Joe Russo has a simple message for any studio trying to replicate the blueprint established by the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Don’t even bother. In an interview with Variety, Russo was asked to offer up some advice to any studios that want to create a cinematic universe off their own intellectual properties. “Yeah, don’t do it,” he said. “Not everything can be sustained through a cinematic universe.”
What may get overlooked with Avengers: Infinity War is how much planning and dedication had to happen in order for Marvel Studios to even get to this point. For a decade, Marvel has had some underwhelming films, like Thor: The Lost World, and Avengers: Age of Ultron, that have threatened the longevity of the MCU. Their ultimate goal was to find a way to keep audiences coming back for more, and there were undoubtedly moments where they experienced some roadblocks.
If the studio had any hope of making sure that Avengers: Infinity War saw the light of day, they needed to keep a very costly juggling act going for ten years. Not to mention that Marvel Studios had to ensure that every director attached to their films kept the line moving, so to speak. With so much asked of everyone involved in the MCU, it’s almost miraculous that Infinity War came to be.
