In 1997 Apple was in the pits. Close to bankruptcy, the house that Jobs built needed a lifeline. In a move that no one expected, Bill Gates, considered to be Jobs's main rival, threw it a buoy in the form of $150 million. But the money didn't come without strings. For that infusion of dough, Apple would have to ship every Mac with Internet Explorer, furthering Microsoft's quest to dominate the Internet. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.
