Grotesque aliens and highly-advanced weaponry have always been a staple of the best sci-fi movies, but everybody knows the real selling point of the genre is the slick spaceships. Armed to the teeth with the craziest, most advanced gadgets human imaginations can conjure up, and able to travel light years in mere moments, these crafts regularly defy logic while looking iconic in the process.
Whether it’s a single-engine star fighter, or a space station large enough to house an entire empire, these vehicles have come to symbolize the advancement of filmmaking technology and imagination. Sometimes, these ships are more than just a way to get from point A to point B, though. They can be so expansive and detailed that most of the movie takes place on board these city-sized crafts. This can either provide the characters a feeling of living inside of a veritable fortress, or a claustrophobic tomb.
This Friday, Ridley Scott will bring Prometheus, the prequel to his 1979 sci-fi classic, Alien, to the screen along with a fierce-looking star cruiser of the same name. The mammoth ship has it all: weapons, life support systems, and countless navigation tools to get the crew where they need to go. But is it the best ship we've ever seen?
