Rumor: Is Russell Crowe Circling Mark Helprin's "Winter's Tale"?

When screenwriter Akiva Goldsman (Angels & Demons) signed on to write and direct an adaptation of Mark Helprin's novel Winter's Tale, we expected him to be too busy with Fringe. But according to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. is setting up the adaptation with a relatively lardge $75 million budget, and Russell Crowe is in talks to play the film's villain.

Making sure to mention that the Gladiator star is "loosely attached" to play the baddie in Akiva Goldsman's directorial debut, the story gets rather intriguing with the idea of a flying white horse in 19th Century and contemporary Manhattan. Our educated guess is that Crowe will play Peter Lake, a simple, uneducated man who is driven to stop time and bring back the dead.

Yes, you have white would-be unicorns and zombies in a movie where Tom Hiddleston, Benjamin Walker, Bella Heathcote, Elizabeth Olsen could find a comfy spot next to Superman's pops. It's all rumor and conjecture for now, but until then we'll keep you posted.

Crowe has done sci-fi before with Virtuosity (1995).
