Zadie Smith

Most hated technology: Facebook
Date: Nov. 25, 2010

British novelist Zadie Smith had some harsh statements to share in her review of The Social Network, “Generation Why?”, featured in The New York Review of Books. The essay argued how Facebook and the Internet has dehumanized today's society. Her words: "When a human being becomes a set of data on a website like Facebook, he or she is reduced. Everything shrinks. Individual character. Friendships. Language. Sensibility. In a way it’s a transcendent experience: we lose our bodies, our messy feelings, our desires, our fears...Or maybe the whole Internet will simply become like Facebook: falsely jolly, fake-friendly, self-promoting, slickly disingenuous." All valid points, though we're sure Zuckerberg would disagree.
